Geocache Description:

This is a part one of a double multi cache where the above co-ordinates are for the first waypoint. In part one you will visit six graveyards during your journey through West and Central Auckland. In general we have selected areas and sites which describe the history of the earlier inhabitants.

Graves at night

Abandon hope all

At each graveyard you will need to determine the co-ordinates for the next waypoint from information found on various tombstones. You can check if the derived values are correct by use of the ‘checksum’. To obtain this figure add the total number of digits in the latitude co-ordinate. Repeat for the longitudinal co-ordinate, then add both final numbers.

e.g. S 36 39.234 (value = 30) E174 52.672 (value = 34)

Therefore checksum = 64

At most waypoints you will need to record a reference number, which will be used in the final cache co-ordinate calculations. Thus the number found at waypoint-1 will state: Reference number for wp1 is “…………”

The final cache contains an important piece of information, which you will need in order to find the first waypoint of 'Even More matters of Grave Concern'. Note that this cache has not yet been published.

Waypoint-1
Coordinates for this waypoint are as stated above. From the information available here you will be able to determine the location of the next waypoint at:

S 36 ab.cde E174 pq.rst

Percy has a special number shown on the memorial. Using this number, (ignore the ‘/’ symbol), find it’s highest prime factor. From this number subtract the highest prime factor of the number allocated to Herbert and then find the highest prime factor of the result to which must be added the difference between the year of departure for Margaret and that of Ellen, less the day of Margaret’s demise.
The result is 'ab'

Determine the product of the month that Cpl Midgely died and the difference between Margaret’s age and her day of the departure, less the month that Edmund fell asleep.
The result is 'cde'

Determine the product of the month that Cpl Midgely died and the difference between Margaret’s age and her day of the departure, less the month that Edmund fell asleep. The result is ‘cde’ Find the sum of twice the difference between the age of Ellen and the day of her departure and the square root of the day that Cpl Midgely died.
The result is 'pq'

Find the difference between the square of half the difference between the year marked on the memorial stone for Cpl Midgley and that of Ellen and twice the difference between the age of Ellen and the day that Margaret died.
The result is 'rst'

Checksum = 62

Reference number for wp1 is: – the forth digit of Herbert’s regimental number.

Now go to next waypoint.

Waypoint-2
Wistful thinking most certainly will not reveal the magic number, but craftiness will provide that precious information. The lowermost inscription should be your guide.
Find the product of the reverse order of digits for the magic number and one twelfth part of the difference between the beginning and end year for Johann Oskar.
The result is the distance in metres to wp4

Now find the location of waypoint – wp3

Find the product of the highest factor of the year of departure for Johann and the sum of the month of his arrival and the month of his departure; less one quarter part of the sum of the day of his arrival and that of his departure.
This number is 'x'

Find the product of the first digit of the magic number and the sum of the digits of the year that he was born; less the sum of the digits of the day of his birth and that of his demise.
This number is ‘y’

Now proceed to wp3. Your objective is ‘Tulloch’
This is located ‘x’m from wp2 on the bearing ‘y’(true)

Waypoint-3
Find the product of the highest factor of the product of the age of Percy and of Alice Maud when they died and one third part of the sum of the day and month of Percy’s demise, to which result you must add the difference between the year of departure of Alice Maud and that of Percy.
The result is the distance in metres to wp4

Reference number for wp3 is: – the sum of the last two digits of the year that Maud died.

Waypoint-4
Here you will find the resting place for a person who made it in the West and as a result built not only his reputation but most of the buildings thereabouts. Using information found at this location determine the co-ordinates for the next waypoint at S 36 ab, E174 xy

Find the product of the sum of the difference between the year that Albert arrived and the year of departure for Eleanor and the month that Fred Albert died, and the difference between the birth year of Pearl and Gordon.
This number is 'a'

Find the sum of the difference between the start and stop years for Pearl and the age of Fred Albert at his demise, to which result divide by the difference between the birth years for Annie and Jack.
This number is 'b'

Find the product of the difference between the year of departure for Gideon and the year that Jack was born and the difference between the difference between the birth year of Harry and that of his demise and the difference between the year that Gordon was born and his demise.
This number is 'x'

Divide the difference between the year that Eleanor passed away and the birth year of Harry by the difference between the difference between the birth year for Margaret and that of her demise and the age of Gideon when he expired.
This number is 'y'

Checksum = 57

Reference number for wp4 is: – the month that Gideon Scott died.

Now go to waypoint 5 at S 36 ab, E174 xy

Waypoint-5

On the South facing side of the memorial you will find information, which will enable you to determine your next destination. Count the number of occurrences of the letters A, E, H, I, K, M, N, O, R, T, U, W

Find the difference between ‘A’ and ‘K’
This number is 'c'

Find the sum of the product of ‘N’ and ‘R’ and half the product of ‘M and U’.
This number is 'd'

Find the sum of ‘A’ divided by the difference between ‘K’ and ‘N’ and the square root of ‘T’ and the difference between ‘O’ and ‘K’
This number is 'p'

From the product of ‘H’ and ‘E’ deduct the sum of one third part of the product of ‘U’ and ‘W’ and the product of ‘M’ and the differece between ‘I’ and ‘K’.
This number is 'q'

Checksum = 56

Reference number for wp5 is: – the day that Mr Davis died.

Now go to waypoint 6 at S 36 cd, E174 pq

Waypoint-6
Using a bollardly approach determine the co-ordinate values for the next waypoint. You will also need other information to be found some 8m distant. Here you will find a memorial of interest. It describes not so much the life of ‘er interred’ but that of her distinguished brother.

Find the sum of half the difference between the age of departure for Jane Bollard and that of John Ganly and the product of the months that John Bollard and Richard Francis died.
This number is 's'

Determine the only two whole numbers, (greater than 1), which when multiplied, equals the expiry year of Richard Francis. Find the product of the sum of these two numbers and the difference between the ages of Jane Bollard and Margaret. To this result deduct one half of the square root of the age of Richard Francis at his demise.
This number is 't'

Find the product of the number of years in which the honourable JB sat as a member of parliament and the age of Jane at her demise. Add together the digits of this number and divide by one fifth part of the day of departure of Jane
This number is 'u'

Sir William made a really exciting discovery, which is engraved on the memorial. Change the letters of his ‘discovery’ into numbers according to their position in the alphabet (A = 1).

Having made the substitution find the sum of the product of the 1 st and 18 th and the difference between the 6th and the 15 th . Thereafter find the product of the first determination and resultant value for the square of the 6th less the square of the 18th less half of the 14th.

Reference number for wp9 is: – How many years did George labour?

Waypoint 10

For the second key to the treasure pay heed to the writing on the plaque. Determine the frequency of occurrence of the letters on the plaque, which will then provide a numerical value. Combine these values with the reference wp numbers and enter them in the formulae below

a = wp5 – (D * E)
b= A + N – (wp6/wp4)
c= wp1
x= wp7 – (wp1 * G) – (wp9/L)
y= wp8 – wp5
z= wp3

Replace the last three digits of each co-ordinate for your present position with the values found above

Now go to: - South -- --.abc, EAST --- --.xyz for the prize.

When you have completed the challenge of “More Matters of Grave Concern”, by visiting all listed waypoints, you will be in possession of the special reference numbers. Please email ‘tanetops’ with confirmation of the numbers so as to be included in the ‘Roll of Honour’
