Geocache Description:

This is a traditional cache that is located in Millport, NY. It is quick and easy. This is the first in what we hope will be a series on the Haunted History of the Area

Millport was once a thriving town that had many mills and shipyards that built canal boats. The introduction of the railroad to the area put a stop to those thriving industries. Now Millport is a quaint little town that most people usually pass in a blur. (The Rails to Trails program is now fixing up this old railroad bed as a walking path that will eventually extend from Watkins Glen to Horseheads. It also happens to contain some nice geocaches.)

Like most old towns this one contains some Haunted History. In the center of town there is a Greek revival house that was built on the corners of 14 and cemetery hill in 1852. This house has been used for many different things through out the years. The house has around 20 rooms complete with a hidden servants staircase and hidden rooms. It was said to be a speakeasy during prohibition and part of the underground railroad. There is rumored to be the body of a slave in the tunnel that connected the basement to the barn that use to be out back. The tunnel supposedly collapsed on the slave but no one has dug out the tunnel to confirm this rumor. This story however is not about the unfortunate slave that was trying to find freedom. This is just a background narrative.

The real story is about a man named Harry H------. It has been said that Harry was an extremely eccentric character. No one seems to have any fond memories of him. He had many interests and rumored to be part of secret societies of the time. He was a man who kept to himself and even painted all of the windows in the house black so that people could not see in. Harry met his demise in this house one night when he fell down the stairs and met his maker at 10:16 p.m. Harry’s funeral was held in the parlor of the house and he was buried in the Millport Cemetery on the hill behind the house.

Now you might wonder why we are telling you this story. One of us monkeys grew up in this house and therefore, have heard many stories over the years. (our family has since moved away, so please DO NOT DISTURB the house and new owners. They are muggles and do not know about the cache.) My family lived there for about 25 years. We had no knowledge of Harry when we moved in. Many strange occurrences started happening in our presence. When we first moved in we would hear a loud noise on the stairs at night. We would run out from our bedrooms and nothing or no one would be there. It happened every night. It sounded like someone was falling down the stairs. After awhile we realized that it was happening at the same time every night…10:16 p.m. People have been pushed down the stairs and through the front window when no one was behind them. We would come home to all our furniture rearranged around the house. We finally learned about Harry and how he died. Over the years we came to terms with Harry and even hung a painting of Harry in the parlor that we found in one of the walls. Eventually the noise on the stairs stopped. The new home owners knew nothing of Harry and have also been witness to strange occurrences, but for the most part Harry has seemed to quieted down over the years.

This cache takes you to the Millport Cemetery. It is a small container that only has room for a log book and geocoins. BYOP. Please make sure that container is SHUT TIGHTLY. Please do not give away the cache container type in logs. Harry is buried here within 300 feet of the hiding space. If you want to chance disturbing him feel free to look for his grave. If you want to know the location of Harry before you attempt to look for him email me and I will give you his location. The cemetery hours are from dawn to dusk please respect.

We take no responsibility for any strange occurrences that may happen to you while attempting this cache. If you have any interesting haunted house stories of your own please feel free to share.

I have had some cachers ask if the story is real. Yes Harry was/is real. The events above really happended. :)

Happy Haunting…I mean Caching!
