Geocache Description:

A cache at another of NE Scotland's hidden natural harbours

The modern town of Newtonhill incorporates Skateraw another of the traditional fishing communities which lay between Aberdeen and Stonehaven. An old (non-operational) smokehouse still exists in the lower village

Like others in this series, Skateraw is situated at the head of a bay which forms a natural harbour from where fishing could be carried out.

Newtonhill sits about three kilometers east of the medieval Causey Mounth road which was built on high ground to allow to connect Aberdeen with Muchals Castle and the coastal towns to the south. It was the route taken by William Keith, 7th Earl Marischal and the Marquis of Montrose when they led their 9000 man Covenanter army in the first battle of the Civil War in 1639.

The cache is a 35mm film canister. Please take your own pen / pencil
