Geocache Description:

Cache is located on a good unsealed road, a little windy in places.

Canned Tuna, canned beef, no, it’s canned RABBIT! From this cache you will see the ruins of on old Rabbit Cannery. In 1877 seventy three men from the Eudunda district went to Parliament House and were responsible for the passing of the “Rabbit Destruction Act”. There was a rabbit plague in progress, and naturally that was the main topic of conversation amongst the farmers and graziers of the time. This led to a Cannery Works being built at ‘Mount Misery’. Trappers and young boys were engaged to trap the rabbits. The industry flourished for a while, but eventually the scarcity of rabbits forced the closure of the factory. Maybe they should start it up again! In 1902 a traveling circus performed for the Cannery workmen on some ground which had been leveled for an arena! 1878 - The Great Rabbit Explosion Passengers aboard the ship Aconcagua had a very unpleasant voyage through the Red Sea when 20,000 cans of rabbit meat exploded in the heat! The stench from the rotting meat permeated the ship for many days. It is thought that in the process of canning the rabbits, insufficient heat had been applied to kill bacteria within the meat. Perhaps that's what finished the industry!
