This cache is set along the former Arbroath and Forfar Railway.
The line opened in 1839 and by 1848 a portion of it was part of the main line to Aberdeen from the south, via Forfar. The line had to be re-gauged to become part of this network. The Forfar to Guthrie section of the line remained open after the closure of the line as a through route. Today a short portion of the line remains between Arbroath and St Vigeans Junction.
This cache is placed in the old wooden station at Auldbar Road. No trace remains of the wooden structure although the wall foundations can be clearly seen. Once you have found the cache walk along the track to the east and see the stationhouse with the signal box in the garden overlooking the line. Looks like it is now a summerhouse. there is also a brick structure attached to the bridge. Any ideas what its for?
With grateful thanks to the Scottish Wildlife Trust for their permission to place this cache and the others in the Balgavies Loch area.
