Red Kite Cache Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The cache is located along a rarely frequented footpath between High Spen and Coalburns (where there is a friendly pub!)
The location was picked because of the panoramic view across Newcastle to the coast and up to Cheviots (on clear day). And also, because there is a very high chance of seeing the spectacular red kites which have been successfully reintroduced into the area.
The cache site is just off the public footpath and accessible with children.
Cache is a 400ml clic-loc food container with an empty tablet pot containing log sheet and pencil.
Original Cache Contents:
Rubber
2 Crayons
Tea light candle
12v 21W bulb
Star bead
There have been ninety-four kites released in Gateshead between 2004 and 2006. Thirty-three of these were released this summer and have green and pink wing tags. (Kites released in 2004 have yellow and pink wing tags and those released in 2005 have orange and pink wing tags.)
The majority of kites have stayed in the Gateshead area but some have ventured further exploring areas of Northumberland, Durham and Teesside.
At present, kites are most easily seen between Burnopfield and Rowlands Gill, and from there, across Barlow Fell to Barlow and Winlaton. Kites are noted on a daily basis over Rowlands Gill and the National Trust’s Gibside Estate. They are frequently over Barlow Fell and in the Barlow Burn (the main wintering location for the birds).
Bus routes 47 and 47a from Newcastle and 65 from Gateshead pass the start of the public footpath leading into the woods
