Geocache Description:

Ammo box located along a less traveled trail of Oak Hammock Marsh. Bring your binoculars!

Oak Hammock Marsh is a restored 36-square km Wildlife Management Area. The original wetland, called St.Andrews Bog once covered an area of nearly 500-square km, stretching from Winnipeg to Teulon. By 1960, the original wetland had been almost completely drained with only 0.6 square km remaining as wetland.

In the early '70s, the provincial and federal government along with the help from Ducks Unlimited Canada and other interested parties, decided to restore the marsh by building a system of dikes to hold the water in place.

The trail, where this cache is located, is the easternmost dike of the Oak Hammock Marsh and is now part of a 30 km trail system. It is seldom used and you will likely encounter a lot of birds along the way.

This cache was created to add to the number of QUALITY caches hidden in Manitoba. It is an official cache in the MBGA Cache Splash event.
Category 29: On the ground, away from any structure or object (buildings, trees, bushes, etc) taller than 15cm.
