When we think of wetlands, we usually think of ducks and geese. But many wetlands are also very important for fish. Most fish use wetlands on a seasonal basis or at some point during their lifetime. Often during the winter, wetlands have little oxygen and many fish will move to a larger water body. But during the warmer seasons, wetlands provide a number of essential benefits to fish such as:

Food
Wetlands are home to many species of invertebrates (such as insects), which sustain populations of smaller fish, such as minnows, shiners and darters. These, in turn, provide food for larger fish species.

Spawning and nursery habitat
Wetland ecosystems are highly structured with many types of aquatic plants, which provide the shelter needed for eggs and fry.

Clean water
Wetlands naturally clean water that flows through them. They filter out chemicals, excess nutrients (like phosphorus and nitrogen), bacteria and sediments from water before it flows into our lakes, rivers and streams. Clean water not only makes for healthy fish populations, but for healthy people.
