A Chaotic Century Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

chaosmanor: Based on the reports from the two most-recent Finders, there is good reason to believe that this cache is gone, or will be soon. Construction on the road looks to be extensive, and the guard rail might be slated for replacement. As this cache is thirteen years old, it is time to make good on our "threat" of a couple of years ago.

Geocache Description:

While it's true that this has already been a chaotic century (and it isn't even a decade old!), this cache has nothing to do with politics or current events. What this is, is our 100th hide {114/100}

Our very first hide was in the Ojai area, hidden almost five years ago, on October 6th, 2002. Kinda hard to believe that we've actually hidden an even 100 caches. Well, a few of them are virtuals; guess we still have a little ways to go to reach 100 physical hides.

Anyway, as is traditional with Puzzle caches, the given coordinates are not where the cache is. You might find some frogs down there, but no caches (we hope!). What you'll need to do is solve the two Mondrianesque puzzles below.

The first one (above) is a single image, composed of a number of small polygons. The colors have nothing directly to do with the solution; they are there purely for aesthetic reasons (i.e. to mess with your head ) All of the smaller polygons were created when several larger four-sided polygons were laid on top of each other. How many larger four-sided polygons are there? This is a one-digit number; call it 'J' (for Jim, of course )

Next, you see an oval with a number of lines and figures enscribed within it. In this case, the colors are part of the solution. Some colors are used to color more than one section within the oval; some colors are used only once. How many colors are used only once? The answer is a one-digit number; call it 'S' (for Sharon, naturally )

BTW: we re-did this picture, to make it a little easier; there aren't as many shapes or colors to worry about. We kept the old picture file, in case you want to work on it. The answer is the same for both.

You might find it easier to work on this with image-manipulation software, such as a painting or photography program. At the least, it might help to copy the images into a word processor that allows you to expand images. When you have the answers, you will need to put them into this coordinate set: N 34º 13.S7J by W 119º 04.SJ1

We finally got around to setting up a solution checker on this one: here it is...

The cache is a magnetic Altoids container, with room for a geocoin or two; in fact, there's an unactivated geocoin inside for FTF. It's a road-side P&G that should be accessible for just about everyone, with a little care; the road isn't terribly busy most of the time. We rated it 1.5 on terrain because there is no sidewalk, so some wheelchairs and walkers might have trouble. Please replace the cache so that it is hidden. Thank you!

Have fun! Good luck!
