Hickory Grove Highlands Hunt

Reaching the final cache requires six stops through the park to determine the final coordinates. At these six stops, you will record ten numbers (and learn a little about the area in the process). Label these A-J in the order you find them.

The total length of the round-trip is just under 2 miles.

Step 1: (N42° 13.959, W088° 12.852)

The coordinates above lead to the parking area, and to an object that will provide something you would need on a hot day. On the back of this object, find the three digit number after the letters "DP." This number will = ABC The correct trail to get on is directly South of this object.

Step 2: (N42° 13.848, W088° 12.783)

At the sign about "Oak- Hickory Woodlands," what is the number of Hickory nuts shown? Answer = D

Step 3: (N42° 13.819', W088° 12.750)

At the sign about "Life Within the Oak-Hickory Woodland" what is the number of animals pictured? Answer = E

Step 4: (N42° 13.780, W088° 12.773)

At the sign about "Boulders of the Woodland," how many thousands of years ago did the glacier melt? Answer = F

Step 5: (N42° 13.773, W088° 12.735)

At the sign about the "Dwellers of Woodlands," what is the number of native tribes mentioned by name? Answer = G

Step 6:(N42° 13.765, W088° 12.640)

At the sign about "The Human Impact," find the number of acres George owned when he retired. Let this three-digit number be the numbers H, I and J.

Step 7:(N42° 13.711, W088° 12.501)

At this spot you will find a bench where you can do your figuring to find the final.
The cache is a lock 'n lock located at: N 42° 13. (A + C + G) (F - D) (G + E), W 088° 12. (I - E) (G - B) (J - H - C)

After finding it, you can backtrack to the wooded path you came out on and complete the interpretive loop by heading northwest into the forest.

If you think you might enjoy a longer hike, you can continue on the trails to find Lyons Den.
