Easy Drive By near a historic Eucalyptus Distillery.
This is an easy roadside cache in a Eucalyptus farming area, not too far off the bitumen.
Eucalyptus oil production is steeped in the history of Kangaroo Island. The oil business started in the late 1880s, reaching its peak in the 1930s when nearly 600 people were employed. Adelaide firm F H Faulding & Co established a plantation near the cache location in the 1920s. The oil was exported around the world, with particularly high demand from China, India and Africa. In the 1950s the industry died as sheep farming was more profitable. However there is still a eucalyptus distillery operating in the area - the last remaining on the island.
