Cinco de Mine Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

ramapo: Archiving this one just short of its 8th anniversary coming up in a few days. Time does fly. I have no interest in dealing with the new regulations. Of all the serious problems in our parks, and lack of maintenance and personnel, it is astounding that the park service goes after geocaching. Of course, the actions of some dysfunctional geocachers might have had something to do with it. Not that it matters much, the game has deteriorated to the point that unless the cache is on a power trail within a few minutes walking distance of the car, it is unlikely that anybody bothers with it.

At least now the impact of geocaching on the delicate ecosystem will be reduced. This cache has been there for 96 months, has had 101 visits, which averages one soul per month. I hope the forest doesn't take too long to recover.

Geocache Description:

Cache is near a mine just off the Hasenclever Iron Trail.

Citicar and I placed this cache after a five mile hike which included visits to four other mines in the area. Luckily for those not interested in a significant hike, the cache is located less than a half mile from the Ringwood Manor lot (as the bird flys). There is a parking fee on weekends and holidays from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

We visited the Synder, Hewitt and Hope Mines, as well as another mine on Hope Mt before finding this one. We had to search for a bit to find it but it is shown on the TC map so we knew it had to be there. A mine is usually a hard thing to miss, although this one seems to have been missing for a long time as it is not shown on TC maps prior to the newest one.

Oddly, I have been unable to find any mention of this mine in the Iron Mine Trails book or any other reference, hence I cannot refer to it by name.

This was our fifth mine of the day, and since it was Cinco de Mayo the cache has been named Cinco de Mine. It's a decent sized hole, though nothing like the Hope Mine.

The cache is a standard ammo can hidden within sight of the mine. I had carried it the whole hike so I was happy to find a worthy spot. As always, exercise caution in the area, especially with pets and children. It is not a deep pit but you wouldn't want to fall in.

The area is quite fascinating. For those interested, you can make a great loop hike by heading north from the Manor parking lot, over the state line using the White Trail and woods roads to see the Synder and Hewitt Mines, both of which are impressive. You can then follow the woods road around to Hope Mine and The Ironman cache, as well as another impressive pit on the side of the mountain. From there, you can pick up the Hasenclever Iron Trail, just before the point where it is closed, and follow it back towards Ringwood Manor, where this cache is located.
