Ntumeni Nature Reserve Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
A little known forested nature reserve with a secluded picnic area and marked hiking trails. Unique to the forest is the endangered Millers Tiger Moth. For birders the spotted thrush, bronze naped pigeon and green coucal are present.
Established in 1970, this 750 ha reserve consists largely of a gorge covered by forest. A visit to this reserve is advised only for the fit as the two trails are both situated on steep terrain. There are no facilities other than a clearing in the forest with two picnic tables. The two trails begin at this clearing. The uPiti Trail is a circular route and takes approximately 2 hours to complete. The Ukhozi Trail takes approximately 4 hours. The Ukhozi Trail covers some beautiful but strenuous terrain. The half-way point is at a spectacular waterfall on the Ngoje stream. At this point the rare Mountain Wagtails are often observed along the stream.
The cache is in a small plastic lunch box with logbook, pen and a variety of small items to trade. The gate to the Nature Reserve may need to be opened but is never locked. There is no entrance fee payable. It is a short walk from the picnic area. Bring a picnic or just enjoy a moment in the forest. A 4x4 is not needed although there are a few km's of good gravel road after the turnoff from the tar Eshowe/Ntumeni road. (Starts off as Kangella Street in Eshowe)
