Geocache Description:

10 AM - 4 PM

SoFlo wants you. Seasoned vets, hobbists, newbies - you are all invited to attend the first ever
South Florida Cachers Geocaching 101 Event

Even though this event is listed as a 101 - it is for veteran cachers as well. We have hidden 11 new and challenging caches in the park just for this occasion. That brings the park total up to a whopping 17 hides! :) A list of all hides will be distributed at the event.

**** We have a pavillion reserved. This event will take place rain or shine. Please remember that we all live in Florida. The weather changes from one neighborhood to the next. Downpour at your location does not mean downpour at the park. ****
The fun begins at 10 am at the #3 pavillion in the beautiful Larry and Penny Thompson Park located in South Dade county, just off the Florida Turnpike. We will kick off with a meet and greet, which will be followed by caching stations workshop.
  • GPS Basics
  • Wild Life - why its not ok for Little Jimmy to ride the gator
  • Plant Party - learn to identify the poisonous plants in South Florida as well as the ones that just make your skin crawl. Also learn how to enjoy the fauna without destroying it.
  • Cache input station - starting with your registration on GC and covering Tb and coin moving, logging your finds and DNF's and ending with appropriate swag.
  • Geo Events - the who, what, whys of attending events. How cachers can affect an area. How to minimize our effect and maximize our impact on the environment.
  • Containers, camo and listings - what exactly does it mean when it says small container? Can you possibly handle a 4 star terrain listing? What should you consider for containers when you are placing a cache?
  • Packing your trail bag and other hints and tricks to help you along the way - is it ok to lie to the police? Should you clue the muggles in?
A Picnic lunch will be served at 12:15 pm with plenty of caching time afterward. The park is loaded with trails and caches and is conveniently located near the Florida Turnpike, the Metro Zoo, Monkey Jungle and a few hundred more of the most interesting caches that you will ever encounter. :) The event is intended to educate new cachers on this great sport as well as give the seasoned vets a chance to share their secrets. This is a great chance for you to bring your muggle friends to get them introduced to your passion.
