Geocache Description:


This cache is situated across the street from a neighborhood, October Woods, built entirely by Knoxville Habitat For Humanity (visit link) its program participants, and assorted community organizations, including churches and businesses. An excellent article about this neighborhood can be found in the News Sentinel at (visit link) A similar Habitat neighborhood, Easton Meadows, is a couple hundred yards farther east, just off of Rutledge Pike.

The residents of these neighborhoods pay for their homes with a mortgage and monthly payments, plus hundreds of hours of sweat equity, spent building others’ and their own homes. One of the things that makes these neighborhoods unique is the fact that the residents who live here worked together for hundreds of hours in classes on a variety of subjects as well as in shaping a strong, positive culture for their neighborhood. Probably more so than almost anyone else who lives in a neighborhood, these residents know and are bonded with their neighbors.

The organizations who sponsor the building of a home are known as Covenant Partners (visit link) They provide half the cost of building the home, and provide a cadre of volunteers to help build the home over a ten week schedule. Many businesses, churches, and civic organizations have partnered with Habitat and the future residents to build homes in this manner.

No experience is needed to help build a home, though you must be 18 or older in order to volunteer for the construction. Expert supervision is provided to both teach workers and guide the build process. You do not have to belong to a Covenant Partner to help, either. Just contact the local chapter vol4hab@khfh.com and ask how you can help. Speaking from experience, this is a very rewarding thing to do! It is always a pleasure, when driving by a home I have worked on to reflect that this is here in part because I helped.

The cache is a small cylinder with room for small trade goods, and presently contains a couple of pottery necklaces we made. It is placed with permission of the property owner, and parking is permitted in the gravel area in front of the block building adjacent to the cache. Cache is too small for a pen, so BYOP. Please be careful removing the lid so as not to damage the cache container configuration. Union meetings are held in the building, so some stealth may be needed.

There is a pretty good view of the sky, so the coordinates should take you pretty much right to the cache.
