Plaques on the bridge show when it was built, and that the river divides the parishes of Bridford and Dunsford. The stepping stones that give the bridge its name are just a few yards downstream but are no longer usable. A little way upstream is the mediaeval weir, which always provides a picturesque view of white water cascading among its boulders. The water was leated off from the river’s left bank, just above the bridge, to turn wheels at two mills not far downstream. The leat still runs, through a new sluice, and one of the mills is still working. The mill wheel can be seen turning beside the road, providing power for making edged and other agricultural tools.

Not far below this mill is a Baptist chapel. The leat runs beneath the floor, in which a trap door gives access to fresh water for use during the Service of Baptism.
