Parking at Norsworthy Bridge.
Burrator Reservoir has the appeal of a road all round, car park spaces at both ends, and toilets at the S.W. corner. The Reservoir is fed by the River Meavy, Newleycombe Lake, Narrator Brook, and the Devonportleat. At the southern end are two dams, Burrator dam across steep narrow valley of the Meavy, and Sheepstor dam across a wider, shallower valley 500 yards to the east.
The two dams are of quite different construction. Burrator dam has a massive granite facing on each side, and a core of rough granite blocks embedded in concrete. Sheepstor dam is mainly of earth with a core of puddle clay and concrete, which in places reaches down over ninety feet before settling on solid rock.
The reservoir was opened in 1898, and during the 1920’s its height was raised by ten feet. It now holds about 1,000 million gallons.
From car park go over Norsworthy bridge and over the stile on the left hand side (see Photo). Follow the path until you reach the sluice gate.
