Geocache Description:

This cache is a small in a small rural cemetary. There is no need to look near any headstones. The "WSQ" in the cache name signifies Wisconsin Spirit Quest, and this cache is in a cemetary.

In this cemetery you will find the stone of Decatur Hare. Mr Hare served in Company I of the Wisconsin 8th Infantry. It was the Wisconsin 8th Infantry that took the eagle "Old Abe" into battle, the famous mascot of the Civil War that was captured in Jim Falls and boarded a steam ship in Eau Claire.

The Wisconsin 8th lost about half of it's men in the Second Battle of Corinth. Shortly after Corinth, the Wisconsin 8th became part of the large military action known as the Siege of Vicksburg. In a series of maneuvers, Union Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and his Army of the Tennessee crossed the Mississippi River and drove the Confederate army of Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton into the defensive lines surrounding the fortress city of Vicksburg, Mississippi. On July 4th, the Battle of Vicksburg was won by General Grant. This was considered the turning point in the war, along with Gettysburg at the same time.
