Geocache Description:

This is a place I discovered by accident, while looking for one of the Bear Claw caches by Jack Pine Savage. Consulting my De Lorme, it showed a road here. What the De Lorme did not show is that the "road" requires one to ford the Eau Claire River here, something that I chose not to do. And since the Cripple Creek Ferry does not operate here, it requires a drive around to get to the other side.

It is however, an exceptionally beautiful spot on the river, and one I would not have found without making a bit of a wrong turn. If you have an old 4x4 with high clearance you can make it across here. But others will have to just stop and admire the view.

The cache is quite near the ford on the forest road, on a small island in the middle of the river. The water is shallow (at least most of the time) and you can wade across in water up to your knees to get to the island. There is a beautiful rapids just downstream, and there is a lot of wildlife here.

The cache is located in the Clark County Forest, in an area with a lot of ATV trails, and there is an ATV trail that crosses here as well. It might also be possible to canoe to this one, but since the water is shallow, I would think it hard to canoe this river except in the spring. If you do canoe the river, please note that there is a Grade II rapids about a mile upstream from here.

Cripple Creek Ferry
By Neil Young

Hey, hey
Cripple Creek ferry
Butting through
the overhanging trees
Make way
for the Cripple Creek ferry
The waters going down
it's a mighty tight squeeze.

All alone the captain stands
Hasn't heard
from his deck hands.
The gambler tips his hat
and walks towards the door.
It's the second half
of the cruise.
And you know he hates to lose.

Hey, hey Cripple Creek ferry
Butting through
the overhanging trees
Make way
for the Cripple Creek ferry
The waters going down
it's a mighty tight squeeze.
