Look out over the water, as the Little Mermaid does in Copenhagen.
Most of us are familiar with the Disney version of "The Little Mermaid," but not everybody knows the original story written by Hans Christian Andersen. This wistful fairy tale doesn't have a happy ending. The besotted mermaid gives up her tongue and her voice to become human. Not only is she mute, but each step she takes is painful, as if walking on swords. She does all this for the love of a prince. When the prince announces that he is engaged to be marry another, the mermaid is offered a chance to return to the sea, but only at the cost of the prince's life. Instead, she throws herself into the sea, and becomes a spirit of mist.
Fini Henrique based a ballet upon this tale, a dance that so moved Carl Jacobsen (of Carlsberg Breweries) that he commissioned sculptor, Edvard Erichsen, to create this statue. The Little Mermaid was a gift to the city of Copenhagen in 1913. The statue sits on a rock, overlooking the water, as if reminiscing on her lost childhood in the sea.
You may resemble the Little Mermaid as you search for this cache by the water. Be careful which rock you choose to step or sit upon. Enjoy the view over the water!
Beware of muggles! This could be a popular spot with the fishermen!
