Geocache Description:

One week before Christmas in 1964, severe weather moved in to the Pacific Northwest creating a series of violent storms. For 3 weeks heavy rains coupled with unseasonable snows melting in the mountains caused widespread havoc. The most extensive damage to the S & P rail lines occurred between Oakridge and the Cascade summit at Odell Lake.
In March 1965 four months later a freight train was headed west from Odell Lake towards Oakridge. Just below Cruzette is a 3000 foot tunnel through Judd Mountain. As the train exited this long tunnel, crossed the Shady Creek Bridge and entered the next tunnel a landslide hit it and swept 3 boxcars carrying paper into the canyon. These cars have since then been swept well over 100 yards and several hundred feet below the bridge into the canyon. 2 of the 3 cars are buried in the landslide debris and the 3rd car is partially buried in the creek. As you approach the car you will see the words “Automated Railway” on the boxcar. Some of the paper was salvaged but quite a few rolls are still in the canyon and can still be seen as you move up the creek to the train cars resting place. The terrain coming up the creek is RUGGED and there is not even the hint of a trail so be prepared! The area contains some incredible old growth that due to the ruggedness of the area have not been logged. It is amazing to look at these trees and wonder how they managed to grow to such a great size in an area plagued by landslides.
The 4.5 star difficulty and terrain rating is justified. The area is spotty with GPS signal in many places including the final coordinates (we could only get 150’ accuracy). You’d better study topographic maps, Forest Service maps and this website extensively before attempting this cache: (visit link) (visit link) It took us over 2 hours to reach the site so plan on at least 2-3 hours in and out. Be prepared and let someone know where you are going. Do not attempt it alone!
