In Pioneer times the schools had no electricity. If kids were thirsty they had to get water out of a bucket and drink out of a wooden spoon. Did you know that a teacher was called a schoolmaster? They had no maps,or charts, they had chalk boards except they called them slates. The children enjoyed dancing and singing like Yankee Doodle, Pop Goes the Weasel, and Turkey in the Straw.
Back then if someone was doing something they were not supposed to like forget their homework or be bad they would have to wear a cap that said: DUNCE.
But they had the coolest games...like Ante, Ante, Over the Shanty, Crack the Whip, Tag and Red Rover.
**ANTE, ANTE, OVER THE SHANTY**
This game was played by tossing a ball over a small building with a V shaped roof, this is the "Shanty".
Two opposing teams are formed
The teams take their places on either side of the building
A player on one team throws the ball over the "Shanty" calling out
"Ante, Ante, Over the Shanty".
If no player on the other side catches the ball, that team will run around to the other side trying to tag members of the opposite team.
If a player is tagged he will now join the tagging team.
The second team now throws the ball over.
If no one on the other team catches the ball, instead of running around to tag opposing players, the opposing team who did not catch the ball will throw the ball back over, shouting the "Ante, Ante, Over the Shanty"
Winner was the first team to acquire three of the other teams players.
