Geocache Description:

Peter Saar built a dam on Mill creek for the first commercial sawmill on the east hill in 1884.

Huge fir, hemlock and cedar trees covered the hills surrounding Kent. The trees were cut by hand using axes and then long, crosscut saws. Two men would cut one tree. They would stand on springboards which stuck out from the tree trunk three to four feet above the tree roots. After felling the tree the limbs were cut off and the trunk cut into sections. Horses pulled the large logs to the mill where the logs were then cut into lumber. Much of the lumber was moved to the river and shipped to Seattle on scows.
