A short walk from Froghall Wharf along the disused gravity operated tramway.

An act of parliament was passed in 1776 authorising the construction of the Caldon Canal. Seven years later the canal had reached Froghall.
The main purpose of the canal was to transport limestone from the quarries of Caldon Low, four miles away. At that time the Trent and Mersey Canal Company owned the mineral rights at Caldon Low and they set about the construction of a series of gravity operated tramways, or plateways, to transport the limestone to Froghall Wharf. These employed a chain system by which the full tubs of limestone descending the long hill, pulled the empty tubs back to the top.
Due to thick foliage in the summer months, you may struggle with the GPS. Our initial co-ordinate reading when the cache location changed slightly in September 2007 was N53°01.710 W001°56.995 - accuracy to 12 metres. The Haywood Hornet kindly provided some alternative co-ordinates earlier in the year for the previous location (which was about 4 metres away) - N53°01.702 W001°56.991. Hopefully you'll find the cache somewhere in the area!
