Geocache Description:

The station was opened on 9.7.1860 and was called Feniton. It was originally in the middle of nowhere. Was renamed Ottery Road on 1.7.1861 and retained this name until 1868 when it was renamed Ottery St Mary. This caused some confusion and many complaints - after all the town of Ottery is 5 miles away - so reverted back to Ottery Road 2 months later. With the opening of the branch line to Sidmouth it was renamed Sidmouth Junction on 6.7.1874.
Local services on the main line were withdrawn on 7.3.1966 and so the future of the station looked bleak. However, it was decided that as a new estate was being built in close proximity of the station that it should remain and so it was re-opened as Feniton in 1971.
If you investigate closely on the North side you can see the top of the arch where the cutting has been filled in. Also you can see hollows in the field.
