The Rock Glen Conservation Area is the home of some ancient
land. A visit to this park and you can see several geological
formations. They range from a few thousand years to millions of
years ago. With a visit to the museum here and you can learn more
about the area. We have brought you here to look at and learn about
The Ausable Gorge.
A gorge is a deep crevasse cut into rock. Gorges are created when a
glacier melts away, not just melts away but melts away in that area
very quickly. As the last sheet of ice receded the melt waters join
what we know now as the Ausable River. With the quick melt of the
area the river cut through the sediment rock here. This took place
between 12,000 to 14,000 years ago. The sediment rock here dates
back millions of years when this entire area was sea water. The
sediment became rock and fossilized the sea bottom some 350 million
years ago. While you are here you can visit an Earthcache that has
a lesson in the fossilization.
The Ausable Gorge is about 1 km in length, about 35 meters deep at
the deepest point and varies on the width. The area you will be
visiting is about 10 meters wide. If you were to walk the trails
along the edge of the gorge you will find geological features
including rapids, waterfalls, outwash deposits, fossils and of
course the Ausable River. As you are nearing the park you can also
clearly see the moraine that this park is a part of as well.
The posted co-ords will take you to Carolinian Canada sign this is
where your journey begins. Do not post your finding rather e-mail
me with them.
After reading the sign here e-mail me how many metres is it to the
rocky bottom in front of you is stated on the sign.
Next follow the path way to your right. This will take you to an
overlook at the top of the gorge. From this point you will want to
look across the gorge towards an overlook across the way. In your
e-mail describe the top of the gorge across the way. You will also
be looking at another glacial feature, describe this feature the
best you can.
The last thing you will be doing is taking a picture of yourself
and posting it to your log. This photo can be taken anywhere in the
park of your choice. Please do not include the sign or the top of
the gorge across from the overlook in your photo.
Rock Glen Conservation Area has a $3.75 park fee to enter. You can
get more info at www.abca.ca.
Be sure to e-mail me within 7 days of logging the cache to
get credit for your work. If the rules of finding an Earthcache and
e-mailing the owner is not followed your log will be deleted
without notice!
