Geocache Description:

Very special thanks to pharma-geologist for setting up this Earth Cache and agreeing to transfer it to the ACGA (now NS Geocaching) so that it could become an official and sanctioned geocache in Keji National Park.

Mill Falls got its name from a sawmill that was built in the vicinity many years ago. No trace of the mill remains although some people can remember an old sawdust pile upstream near Kejimkujik's Visitor Centre.

The geological history of the falls began unimaginably long ago and far away. The bedrock here is slate and is part of the Halifax formation of the Meguma group. Slate is formed from silt deposited in layers. The sediments that made the slate as well as the quartzite also found in Kejimkujik, originated in Africa. They were washed by rivers into the ocean about 500 million years ago.

Movement of the Earth's crust brought the slate here. The continents of Africa and North America came together 380 million years ago. When the continents separated again, some of the bedrock that had lain off the African coast stayed behind.

The falls themselves are much more recent in origin. Since the end of the last Ice Age, 12,000 years ago, the Mersey River has flowed over this ancient ledge of rock, creating the falls you see there today.
