I have been looking at caches in the area that have been temporarily disabled for a while now and it looks like your cache has been under the weather for some time. While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time I don’t think we can do so any longer. Therefore, I have archived this cache. If you haven’t done so already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

When repairs to this cache are completed and it is time to have it reposted, it will be no problem. Just drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache or better yet, the URL of the cache page. You will still be able to access your cache page just as before by going to your “My Cache Page” and clicking the link of your cache.

I will be more than happy to take a look at your cache again to see if it is still is within the guidelines of the Geocaching.com website for cache placement and posting. I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the future.

Geocache Description:

This is a multi-stage adventure which will take you on a picturesque walk along a short stretch of Branford's shoreline and introduce you to a "secret" island. The above coordinates will take you to small grassy area off the trail where you will find a plaque. Anyone having done my previous caches will be delighted to know you do not have to use any data on the plaque

Not too far from Branford's famous Thimble islands, rumored to be a resting place for Captain Kidd's treasure, and home to such well known residents as Jane Pauley and Garry Trudeau, there is a secret island in the salt marsh. The locals love to speak of the potential that Kidd's treasure is really located on this island. Many are convinced that Kidd or Blackbeard spent time hiding on the island from the British authorities. Now it is your turn to come search for the treasure buried here. But first you must find the message in the bottle sent out by one of the stranded pirates. Once you find the message, follow the obvious path (find my mother's day cache along the way-pending approval by the Branford Land Trust) to the secret passageway (coordinates for the trailhead provided). Depending on the direction you come from, you may see the beginnings of many trails left by those who, trying to reach the treasure, wandered off into the marsh never to be seen again!

The path to the island does get quite overgrown in the summer and the coordinates for the trailhead will be helpful. PLEASE no bushwacking to the final. It is bad for the salt marsh! Once on the island, you are looking for a 55 cal ammo can.

There is no way to make this hike a loop. So, park the car at either parking area and plan to hike to the other end of the trail and back. Take the time to check out the Osprey nesting platforms, many egret and the innumerable fiddler crabs. This is a favorite hike for dog walkers. So, bring your canine companion and prepare to be social

Even I noticed the poison ivy near stage one. Should not pose a problem for retrieving that stage but, be careful! For the final, one part of the island is an obvious hot spot for revelry of the town's youth. I did my best to pick a hiding spot free of broken glass but please be careful when searching! Due to the popularity of this trail, stealth will be required at all stages. Did not get a specific FTF prize. So, FTF feel free to take a piece of swag gratis. (Let me know what you took to help plan future treats )
