Geocache Description:

A small pullout along the Spur Highway offers stunning views of Denali and the Alaska Range on clear days from the bluff above the village of Talkeetna.

The ammocan cache is hidden amongst the debris of a fallen spruce tree, just a few dozen feet off the edge of the pavement. Use care going down the embankment – almost all the vegetation you see has thorns! Ease your way towards the downed spruce tree, staying to the right (northeast) side of the stump – there’s few brambles or devils club on that route.

The historic village of Talkeetna is the jumping-off point for climbers challenging the Alaska Range and visitors experiencing Alaska's wilderness with a flightseeing tour of Mt. McKinley (Denali) and the other magnificent peaks of the Alaska Range. Some board jetboats for sightseeing or fishing tours of the Susitna and Talkeetna river systems. Pause here on the bluff before heading another mile into town, and enjoy the sweeping vista across the Susitna River valley to Denali beyond.

If you’re staying at the nearby Talkeetna Alaska Lodge, this cache is a half-mile stroll (one way) on paved pathways from the front door of the lodge. By mid-May the sun won’t set before 10:30pm at night, making this a delightful way to walk off the sumptuous dinners served in the lodge’s dining room! The pullout is plowed in the wintertime… but there’ll be a bit of a berm to clamber over before accessing the forest.
