Geocache Description:

The coordinates take you to an information board opposite the kirk in the village of Whitekirk. The kirk, as you will see, is actually red. It used to be white as it was covered in limewash.

It was a place of medieval pilgrimage from 1300. The sick came to drink from Our Lady's Well, which unfortunately has long since dried up and disappeared. It is said that when Edward III invaded East Lothian in 1356, a soldier took a ring from the virgin statue, whereupon a crucifix fittingly fell and "dashed out his brains". Their ship was subsequently wrecked off Tynemouth in a violent storm. The moral of the story: don't mess with God.

After the reformation pilgrimages were discouraged as they were associated with catholic beliefs. However, to this day, in May each year, there is a modern pilgrimage to the three churches of Whitekirk, Lennoxlove chapel and St Mary's in Haddington. In 1914 suffragettes set fire to the kirk and all but the stone walls was destroyed. I'm not sure how much good this act did their cause! The kirk was restored in the early 20th century.

Whitekirk is also the location of one of only 3 tithe barns in Scotland. This was built in the 1500s using stone recycled from the pilgrims' hostels. There is a tithe barn at Foulden in the Borders (see Foulden Village) and the other has been converted to a church at Culloden in the Highlands.

From the information board, the year that the kirk was restored was 19AB
