An easy cache in a mariners dream location. The cache name was inspired by an insurance TV ad from years ago that cachers my age and older might remember. Enjoy. The cache is a film canister.
Paynesville is a popular holiday location in East Gippsland on the Gippsland Lakes. It has long been popular with boating enthusiasts who holiday and retire here. Cruising around the area of this cache it is not uncommon to see boats moored at the private jetty at the rear of houses, and the boats in many cases exceed the value of most who will find this cache own residences. Paynesville has long been associated with boat building, and still today has some of Victoria's best boat builders and repairers working from businesses along the road in to this cache. The motor yacht club is just up the way, and one of Victoria's only two Victoria Police Water Police bases is passed on the way in. The largest boat ever to trade & travel on the Gippsland Lakes was built here early last century. It later saw life as a ferry on Sydney Harbour and as a fishing boat in Queensland. The Gippsland Lakes was for a long time in the late 1800's and early 1900's the main route for passengers and freight from Melbourne to Gippsland. The roads to the area were extremely poor quality and much was invested in using the waterways to trade and supply the Gippsland goldfields, including the construction of a permanent entrance to the lake sysem at Lakes Entrance which is still in use today, and which replaced the natural entrance which was frequently impassable.
