Saar Cemetery Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Prying Pandora: While the church that owns and maintains the property has been wonderful to work with, they understandably have more important things to do than arrange for regular visitation opportunities at the cemetery. I am reluctantly archiving this cache.

Geocache Description:

Explore Kent’s historic pioneer cemetery.

The posted coordinates are for parking.

Saar Street, Willis Street, Meeker Street, Monster Road... Many of the streets in this area were named after local pioneer families. Some of those families are buried in this cemetery.

Saar Pioneer Cemetery was established October 1, 1873 when the wife of Peter Saar, Margaret, was buried on the family homestead. She was later joined by other pioneers of the the White River Area, when their survivors were given permission to bury their loved ones on the site. In 1905 Kent United Methodist Church was granted the deed to the cemetery and remains the owner of the property today.

After many years the cemetery fell into disrepair. Despite several Eagle Scout service projects dedicated to restoring it, many tombstones were damaged and blackberries threatened to swallow this historic place altogether. Finally, in 2004, Saar Cemetery came to the attention of the South King County Genealogical Society, which has undertaken the massive project of restoration, removing the blackberries, and identifying the graves that are no longer clearly marked. Ironically, Margaret Saar’s grave is still among the missing. If you have visited this place previously for now-archived caches, you will be amazed at what they have accomplished.
