Väsby båtsmanstorp/Väsby Boatswains holding




The Boatswains holding is known since 1725. The farms on Järvafältet was placed into areas beholden to Roslags 1:st Company. Each area was obliged to support a soldier or a boatswain for the army or navy. The Boatswains holding lies approximately 600 meters north of Väsby farm close to the unpaved road leading to Viby.

The boatswain got a holding consisting of a cottage with necessary outhouses, cabbagepatch ½ acre tilled field and meadows to give two summer loads of hay. During peace time the boatswain worked on the nearby farms. The holding and the boatswain who lived there was traditionally named after the farm the holdning was beholden to. The boatswain living here at Väsby was called Wässberg or Väsberg.

The tradition with the small crofters holdings for soldiers and boatswains was discontinued at the end of the 19:th century when general conscription was introduced. The last crofter moved out in 1885. The crofters holding burned down in 1928.

The foundation of the cottage, bricks from the fireplace, ruins from the vegatable cellar and some lilac bushes are the most obvious signs from Väsby Boatswains holding.

The grounds around the crofters holdning have been cleared and the old crofters land are farmed using old methods.
