This is my first geocache and involves a walk along part of the disused railway line on the south side of Bath.
The walk is less than 2 miles and although is fairly level, there are a couple of narrow, steep and sometimes muddy paths which may not be suitable for pushchairs. The cache also starts off next to a busy road before finding the path. The cache is a small 1.5l Tupperware box.
The path runs along the route of the old Somerset and Dorset Railway Line than ran from Green Park station in Bath to Bournemouth. The line closed in 1966, but some of the line has been converted into a footpath running from Twerton through Oldfield Park to Bear Flat, and is known as the Linear Park. At Bear Flat, the railway went through the Devonshire Tunnel (447 yds long), then along Lyncombe Vale and into Combe Down Tunnel (1 mile long). Sadly, both of these tunnels are closed to the public, but the linear path does continue between the two. An organisation has been formed – The Two Tunnels Greenway which is campaigning to open these tunnels to the public, and to continue the linear path/cycleway all the way from Bath to join the Sustrans Path (NCN24) which exists at the other end of the Combe Down Tunnel. For more details see www.twotunnels.org.uk
**UPDATE** As of 12th Dec 07, Sustrans Connect2 of which the Two Tunnels Project is a part, won the People's Lottery £50M vote. This now means that opening up the tunnels is much more of a possibility. Also planning permission was recently granted for the project. Watch this space!!
