Geocache Description:

The following appears at the memorial of a few who perished serving their community:

“The Hardin Mall Sanitary Lift Station Tragedy

“On July 5, 1985, one Radcliff Police Officer and two Hardin Co. Water Dist. #1 employees died in a attempt to rescue a third Hardin Co. Water Dist. # 1 employee who had been overcome by sewer gases at the bottom of an underground lift station.

Those words appear on a stone to the right of the memorial stone. The memorial is dedicated to their families, their friends, and their co-workers.”

The monument itself is gray granite and has the following engraving:

“DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF BILLY BOB BURNS, DANNY CUMMINGS, RICK DERUITER, RAYMOND “JUNIOR” DAWLEY”

The cache owner knew three of the four people having lost their lives. The cache owner graduated high school with the oldest sister of Raymond, and worked with Raymond’s mother for a few months. One must wonder why they employees failed to use the sewer gas monitoring equipment or their Self-Contained Breathing Apparatuses (SCBA) like firefighters use. The equipment was part of the inventory of the water district. A fifth person could have perished, but he could not fit into the opening.

The cache container is a magnetic key case attached to a hard surface near the memorial. It is easier to slide the key case off the metal strip instead of pulling vertically away from the metal. And, it may help keep the adhesive strip in place. Originally listed as a Terrain Level 1, I have changed it to 1.5 because I don't have a wheelchair to test for wheelchair accessability. I have also changed the Difficulty Level to 1.5 just in case someone confined to a wheelchair cannot reach the container.

This cache was created, hidden and is maintained by a member of the Heartland Geocachers, GEOCKY, INKY and MAGC.
