This cache was commissioned by Allieballie over a year ago now!
Wish I had come here earlier as it is a great place. It is an old
octagonal observatory tower built in 1845 by Admiral George
Ferguson, the fifth laird of Pitfour as an equine observatory.
Folklore says he erected the tower in order to watch his stables as
his horses practiced for races. It never housed a telescope to look
at the stars! It offers great views of Buchan for miles.

The tower is constructed of grey granite with the lower section
painted white. There is a spiral staircase which takes you to the
top viewing platform, where there are eight windows, each with a
map underneath to tell you what you are looking at. There are also
wooden stairs which lead to a lower viewing area. There is a dog
hitching post at the bottom of the tower. The tower was bought by
Banff and Buchan District Council in 1993. Restoration work cost
£75,000. It is near Aden Country Park and is only a 5-10 min walk
from The Observatory carpark. There are further walks through the
woods, with a cairn and a stone circle to be seen if you want to
walk further. The longer walks take 2-3 hours. It is a small cache
with small swaps and a FTF geocaching pen. GPS can be erratic in
the trees, so be sure to take a note of the clue! Thanks to
Hilltramper for this excellent photograph....
