Red Cloud Cemetery is not only interesting because of it's history, but also it's ecology. It is one of many locations participating in the Rice Lake Plains project. It is located in prairie grassland, a small parcel remaining from a time when large parts of southern Ontario were prairie and savanna woodland.
'Red Cloud Cemetery is an example of Tall Grass Prairie with grasses such as Big blue stem, Little blue stem, Indian grass, and flowers like Butterfly weed, Low bindweed and Blazing star.' Competing non-native vegetation is being carefully controlled here as part of the Rice Lake Plains restoration initiatives. You can read more about this project near the cache site.
Historically, Red Cloud was a thriving community in the late 1800s. It included sawmills, gristmills, a shingle mill, sash mill, farms, a school and a cemetery. The cemetery is a source of information about the settlement of the community as well as a memorial to the early inhabitants of the area. The first buriel dates back to at least 1850 and the last buriel was in 1940.
