This is located in the Skylands Manor section of Ringwood State Park.
I found these mystery pits while out hiking last fall and I thought about placing a cache there in the hope that someone would know what the pits were from. Since then, I have learned that they were test pits for mining operations, but they are still "Mystery Pits" as no one seems to know when the pits were dug or who did it. The pits are mentioned on page 71 of the "Iron Mine Trails" book which is available from the NY-NJ Trail Conference.
The pits are close to the Halifax trail and one of the carriage roads and are roughly 2.5 miles from parking lot "C".
PLEASE NOTE: There is a $5.00 parking fee on weekends and holidays from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
