Geocache Description:

This cache will take you to the remains of the Welland Railway Bridge that crossed the First and Second Welland Canals.

At this point in time, the Welland Canal did not end in Port Colborne, but joined up with the Welland River and made it's way to Chippewa and then along the Niagara River to Lake Erie.

The Welland Railway built a bridge, constructed with stone supports, across the Canal in the late 1830's to accommodate rail traffic.
Once the Canal was extended to Port Colborne in 1881, the bridge was upgraded and in 1944 a modern steel structure replaced the former stone supports.
Sometime later (not sure exactly when) a land bridge was built to cross the waterway and the current railway line runs across it's span.

All three types of railway supports are still evident in this area and also some remains of the shipyard, built by John P. Abbey, which was located between the lock connecting the canal with the Welland River and the Welland Railway line, are still evident.
