Geocache Description:

The cache is situated at a small oasis for wildlife on the hills to the north of Loch Fitty.

When I sit at this spot with the winds blowing in from the north I can almost hear the ghosts of times past from the lost village of Lassodie.

The village of Lassodie was situated close to Loch Fitty in the parish of Beath in Fife. The village grew up around the mining industry at the Lassodie pits and by 1901 had a population of over 2000. There was a post-office and Co-op at New Rows. The school and the United Free Church (St Ninians) were also situated at New Rows.

By 1931 the mines had closed and many miners were given notice to quit their homes.

This is how the situation was covered in the press:

19 Feb 1925
Four coal pits owned by the Fife Coal Co are to be shut down. The pits are the Lassodie and the Bathie at Kelty and the Foulford and No 9 at Cowdenbeath. Fully a thousand miners will be thrown out of work with small prospect of obtaining other employment in the district

19 Aug 1933: A Disappearing Village

Since the closing of Lassodie Colliery about 2 years ago, the population of the village, which at one time exceeded 2000, has been gradually dispersed. The houses known as Old Rows have been out of existence for some time; Fairfield, an isolated part of the former village, and the New Rows still afford accommodation for 13 families.

The Presbytery recommended that the church be closed, as the people resident in the village had received fourteen days notice to quit their houses.

Intimation has now been made for the early demolition of the New Row houses which will mean the disappearance of what for nearly a century was Lassodie proper. The announcement was also made by the postal authorities that they will be closing the Post Office, the business of which has been conducted in one of the New Row houses for over 50 years. Within a short time all that will remain of the once prosperous mining village will be the church and manse.

Lassodie was indeed demolished and is now the site of a Scottish Coal Company open cast mining operation.

Park at the walker parking area as the gates to the fishery are closed at dusk. Follow the path down to the loch then NE out along the causeway.
