Winterbrook Falls Forest Walk. A
walk to a waterfall with a little bit of history along the
way! :)
Winterbrook Falls are a set of waterfalls, almost 100m high that
cascade off the side of Black Bluff. While they have water coming
over them for most of the year, after some rain is the best time to
go, despite the fact that this can make the track a little tough
going in places.
The walk as approximately 4 hours return through some fantastic
rainforest and passes by an old tramline worked by the Winter
family, a sawmiller in the area from the 1870's. The tramline was
costructed to haul logs of King Billy Pine out of the forest which
was selectively logged for several decades. This logging was not at
all like the logging of today, with teams sent into the thick scrub
to fell giant trees which were dragged across the forest floor by
bullock teams and then transported by a very rudimentary wooden
tramline. Parts of the tramline still exist along the walk to the
falls, as do many King Billy Pines. This area is unique in being
the northern natural limit for this species, some of which may be
1000 years old.
The cache contains the usual items and is hidden at the falls
lookout, about 15 minutes from the falls themselves (an extra 15
minutes which is well-worth the effort). the container is a small
Team Tiges PVC v1.5.
NOTE: CACHE CONTAINER WAS NOT LARGE ENOUGH TO HOLD A PEN. PLEASE
BRING YOUR OWN WRITING IMPLEMENT.
