Geocache Description:

A fairly straightforward multi-cache that takes the cacher to areas of scenic and historical interest.

The cache is the second to be hidden for the younger members of the dunk090 family.

The co-ordinates given above take you to a memorial stone for Major General Walter Brook Rice, who started his military career with the Royal Artillery in 1858. He served in the Indian Mutiny and retired from the army with the rank of Major General in 1885.

In 1892 at the age of 65 he was staying with his sister at Drumintoul Lodge (N 57° 10.813 W 3° 47.300). During this visit he came to Loch an Eilein with his coachman to skate on the frozen loch. With hindsight this was possibly not the best decision, as the Inverness Courier reported: "The unfortunate gentleman after falling through the ice, almost immediately rose again, but only for a moment. Raising his arms, he shouted to his servant "Good-bye," and again sank to the bottom, never again reappearing."

Such an end seems unlikely in these days of climate change!

The inscription on the memorial gives the day and month in 1892 when the accident occurred. In the format AB/CD, e.g. if it was the 13th October then this would be 13/10.
Add (B-C) to the north co-ordinates, and subtract (B+C)x(A+C) from the west co-ordinate to find the location of the cache.

The cache itself is a small lock'n'lock container, suitable for small TBs and swaps. It is not far from the edge of the loch so please keep an eye on younger cachers! Further information on the view at the cache site can be found on the page for HighlandNick's nearby cache (Strathspey 5).

Thanks to Dunk090 for allowing me to adopt these caches and keeping them going
