Geocache Description:

We are hosting an event atop one of the more beautiful areas that we have been wanting to visit

We are giving this a 4.5 difficulty after discussion because while the terrain does not change, it is much harder in June . 112 degrees was the reading at the top.

Some might ask why we want to host an event in the middle of nowhere, but then they most likely do not know us.

We wanted to have an event that people can remember, not for the games we played or prizes won. Not for the caching adventures in the area nor to bring people from far away. We are hosting this event so friends and family can come together to help celebrate a very special month.

Back in July of 2004, our friend Steve (AzCachemeister) released a cache for others to hunt that was a very special cache. It was placed for another friend Carol (AzGeckoGirl) to find and get some special gifts from. That cache is called Welcome Home.
In June of 2005, we were invited to attend an event called Nuthin' Fancy which was the celebration of union between these dear friends.

Two years have since passed and they are wonderful friends whom we enjoy the company of as often as possible.

Back in June of 1993, I also had the fortune of a wonderful woman saying "I do" and god knows why but she is still by my side today.

June is also the month of my birth a few years ago, so what better time to try to bring some of our extended family on an adventure?

You are invited to make the drive and hike to join us. I plan to do some form of repeat that we had on our adventure in January to Tortolita Peak. We will bring a BBQ grill as well as some munchies, if you are planning to attend, please let us know so we can plan for the amount of food I need to throw in my pack!

My wife has been interested in this trip for awhile and I, as well as some friends, felt this would make a great place to tell her once more how much I love her.

To steal from the words of the great hiker known as Wily Javelina:
To get to the trailhead follow I-19 south past Rio Rico to the Pena Blanca Lake turn off. Follow Ruby Road for about 12 miles to a large dirt parking area and FS trail marker 100 (N31 24.285 W111 08.821). A two-wheel drive vehicle will have no problem making it to the trailhead, weather permiting. The hike to the lookout is around 2.3 miles on a well maintained but relatively steep trail. The lookout tower is on the southern most peak of the Atascosa Mts. It is 200 ft shy of Atascosa Peak , the range hightpoint, which is the peak to the north. I highly recommend this hike, it makes for the perfect day outing. I climbed the peak during mid December (12/19/03) in 70 degree weather wearing only shorts and T-shirt. The vistas are spectacular and the hiking is downright fun.

Now if you can make the drive and the hike, we would love to have others come out and celebrate with us...
More information will be added as the time gets closer, so mark your calendars and get those hiking boots dusted off. We have an adventure to undertake!!!

The event will be held at Atascosa Lookout GeoCache area

More information on the hike required to reach the lookout can be found here: Atascosa Lookout hike.

"Do not jump into your automobile next June and rush out to the Canyon country hoping to see some of that which I have attempted to evoke in these pages. In the first place you can't see anything from a car; you've got to get out of the goddamned contraption and walk, better yet crawl, on hands and knees, over the sandstone and through the...cactus. When traces of blood begin to mark your trail you'll see something, maybe."
~Edward Abbey

Getting There:
The most direct and scenic access is on Arizona 289, also known as Ruby Road.
From Tucson, drive 55 miles south on Interstate 19 past Green Valley and Rio Rico to Arizona 289 at Exit 12.
Follow paved 289 west toward Peña Blanca Lake for about nine miles to its intersection with unpaved Forest Service Road 39.
To reach the trailhead for a hike to the Atascosa Lookout, continue west on FR 39 about five miles.
The trailhead is on the right side of the road, 14.5 miles from the Interstate 19 exit, with parking on the left side of the road.
