Geocache Description:

The City of Tallahassee changed the name of this pond to Evans Pond in 2020.

The historical records of the park indicate it was once part of the one square mile Lakeland Plantation that had three lakes on the tract owned by a Patrick Houston, a native of South Carolina. The three lakes were referred to as Lake First, Lake Second and Lake Third.

Chapman Pond was probably Lake First and was also known as the "wash pond" due to its convenient access for plantation slaves to do their laundry. It was later referred to as Mosley's Pond. Mosley was a one-time governor of the state. Other names it was known as include the "Governor's Pond", "Sylvan Pond" and "Duval's Pond." Duval was also a governor of the State. Ducks were placed in the pond after the City purchased it from the Saunders family. The Saunders family had a home just north of the pond, and it became known as the Duck Pond. At the suggestion of Monticello Nurseryman, Fred Mahan, the City Commission agreed to name the site after the deceased Supreme Court Justice, Roy H. Chapman on April 28, 1953. The marker plaque defines the park as "Chapman Memorial Park." The deed listed with Leon County conveys the pond as Sylvan Lake. This 5.22 acres with 2 acre pond site in a neighborhood setting, serves as a storm water retention facility and as a passive park. There is a small parking area and park benches overlooking an aesthetic natural spring pond. During 2003, the siltation of this pond, not unlike other ponds in our park system, needed to be removed to restore the pond to its natural state. The site now remains a favorite gathering place for noontime lunches. Parking is available and there are some benches. Dr Charles Evans (1945-2013) was a civil rights activist, president of the Tallahassee branch of the NAACP, and Associate Dean of the FAMU School of Business and Industry.
Stay away from water, snakes.

Have fun.

PLEASE NOTE: Parks are open from sunrise to sunset
