There is a lonely guy who watches over the road up into the hamlet of Floriston. Many people do not notice him, since he's very quiet, so I thought maybe he could use a visitor or two. He sits alone atop a rock outcropping, watching the travelers on the highway. In the summer, he sees the occasional kayaker or white water boats on the river, since this is a popular rafting take-out point. Labor Day weekend keeps him/her entertained watching “burners” coming and going to Burning Man with all their strange rigs and accoutrements and dust.
I've wondered what he thinks about as he watches the world go by... maybe you can ask him while you're there? thescheib has named him "the cosmic leaf rake from outer space" - maybe you'll find a better description for him... or her?? Or maybe you'd like to tour on up the wee road to explore Floriston itself, and view the lonely sentinal from above.
There is a good place to park on the north side of the large culvert "tunnel" through which you pass on the way to Floriston. That is probably the least obvious parking spot, muggle-wise. Take a peek at the historical information at that spot!
