Sam's Folly: A Kayak Cache Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

slackpacker: Alas, this one has gone missing. A truly special spot, but not too many finders over the years, so I don't think I'll replace the Pelican case. Thanks to all who visited!

Geocache Description:

A moderate "cruise" to a cool spot on Lake Sequoyah in Highlands, NC.

Lake Sequoyah is the picturesque body of water viewed from Highway 64 west of Highlands. A dam constructed in the 1920's formed the lake, which provides drinking water to the town of Highlands.

The cache is located near an interesting structure known as "Sam's Folly." The building is an old mill that has been converted to a really cool residence; the structure is built on the side of a waterfall, and water actually travels through the foundation of the house and spills out the side into the waterfall. A truly unique building.

The building got its name from its owner, a retired military man named "Sam," who decades ago constructed the mill from pieces of three old mills; he built a tram from the highway, and envisioned that the mill would be a popular tourist attraction. Unfortunately for Sam, the endeavor didn't attract tourists like he had hoped, and it was closed - with the defunct mill becoming known as "Sam's Folly." At a later date the building was converted to the residence now seen.

This cache is not placed at Sam's Folly, but from a nearby viewing spot. You do not need to exit your canoe/kayak to find the cache - in fact, it would be hard to do so. The cache container is a black waterproof box built for watersports. It is held in place by a carabiner - do not remove the carabiner! - but simply free the cache, sign/trade, and reclip the container's cord into the carabiner.

[The best spot to put-in is the small landing on Hwy 64 near the dam (coordinates, below). You may note in the fineprint on the small nearby sign that, due to the lake serving as the town's watersource, there is a $10 annual permit fee to use the lake. I have paid this fee - for two boats - although I have never been asked to verify that while using the lake; in the highly-unlikely event someone asks you, please tell them that the fee has been paid!]

I hope you enjoy this neat spot!
