A forest hike
Gould Lake Conservation Area has much to offer particularly some great secluded trails. Gould Lake Conservation Area information and trail maps can be found at [http://www.cataraquiregion.on.ca/lands/gould.htm]. It’s a bit of a convoluted process just reaching the parking area and trailhead at N44° 27.630 W076° 35.265 so check the directions carefully. There is a small entrance fee. The cache can also be reached by the back door. There is a trailhead at N44 27 720 W076 34 222 (13 km. N of Sydenham on twisty Bedford Road). You can pull the car off the road there. Either way, you may want to waymark where you left the car. Wear sturdy shoes. Bring mosquito protection and drinking water. A cell phone may be useful if you turn an ankle and need to call friends to carry you out.
To reach the cache take “Wagon Trail” on the E side of Gould Lake following the blue triangular trail markers until you reach “Porky Junction” It is a 20 minute comfortable walk through mostly deciduous forest. Here take “Tom Dixon” trail continuing to follow the blue trail markers for about another 20 minutes on a markedly more demanding trail, turning N and uphill as you near the lake. The trail gets right to the edge of an unmarked, high cliff. Be cautious if hiking with younger children. There is considerable elevation change over a short distance and the trail gets very steep and rough. Perspiration is inevitable on this section.
The real reward is the great scenery along the way and especially at the cache site, “Stephanie Point”, a great, secluded picnic spot.
