McCall's Cabin Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

slackpacker: Checked on this one Saturday and confirmed the cache is gone. This is neat area, but has it gone through significant changes since the cache was hidden. What was once a somewhat hidden spot up an old overgrown road has now been exposed by a very wide gravel driveway that is being used as a staging area for the endless renovations at Dry Falls. There are plans to further develop this area - as a parking area, with a pedestrian bridge over Hwy 64 to Dry Falls - but I imagine budgets will put all that on indefinite hold. The cabin is neat, and worth a look, cache or no cache. That said, I'll wait until the construction finally ends and if things quiet down we'll see if a cache might work again - thanks to all who visited!

Geocache Description:

A short walk to an old authentic mountaineer's cabin (at least what's left of it!)

This cache is hidden at McCall's cabin, a short walk from the parking area on Hwy 64, and a couple of miles west of Highlands, NC.

The cabin was originally located in the Clear Creek community (south of Highlands, down Hwy 28) and dates to the 1800's. The Park Service moved the cabin to its present location and announced plans to restore it, but you will note that not a lot of progress has been made.

To me, the neatest thing about the cabin is the size of the timbers used in its construction - truly massive logs - all with signs of hand-hewing. I can't imagine how hard it is to flatten and then notch an 18" diameter log! The cabin also has a great view from its back deck.

The cache is a lock-n-lock container starting life chock-full of fun stuff for kids. To find the cache, look for a small pulloff on Hwy 64 with the street sign "Walden Way." There are two forest service gates - you can figure it out from there.

Enjoy!

[10/07 Update: There is Forest Service-related construction in the "front yard" and approach road of the cabin; apparently, the renovations at Dry Falls (just down Hwy 64) will eventually result in an additional parking area near the cabin, with a pedestrian walkway over Hwy 64. The cabin renovations will be included in a related but later phase, apparently. In spite of the construction traffic, the cabin currently appears untouched, so the cache remains viable.]
