Geocache Description:

This is a two-stage cache that takes you to the exact location of the first mountain scene filmed in the movie "Deliverance". You will be driving through that fictional movie community for the first stage where the "Dueling Banjos" scene and "Griners Garage" scene was shot. The first stage gets you the coordinates to the final stage and micro log.

Deliverance is a 1972 Warner Brothers motion picture drama directed by John Boorman. Principal cast members include Burt Reynolds, Ronny Cox, Jon Voight, and Ned Beatty, in his film debut. The film is based on a 1970 novel of the same name by American author James Dickey. Dickey's character Drew Ballinger plays the instrumental "Dueling Banjos" on his guitar with a mentally retarded hillbilly named Lonnie playing banjo on the porch of a cabin (which now does not exist).

The "Griner's Garage" was located very close to my stage 1 coordinates (and several of the structures still stand). The final stage is located where the gravel road ended at a creek ford and where movie production crews had to drag a collection of props and actors another two miles up a terrible road to the shooting location. The road is much improved since the 1971 filming.

Note: The scenes on the DVD run from 2 minutes, 50 seconds to 14 minutes; 12 minutes of action taken from these two locations.
