Covered Bridge
This cache is located only a few steps off the Arabia Mountain PATH bike trail.
The bridge spans Stephenson Creek, a major stream within the Nature Preserve. Tucked into the landscape, it offers a scenic crossing and a quiet reminder of how paths, waterways, and design often come together in meaningful ways.
Horace King's Legacy
The PATH Foundation built this bridge in 2004 using a lattice truss design associated with Horace King, a gifted bridge builder who was born into slavery before the Civil War. King purchased his freedom in 1846 and went on to become one of the most respected bridge builders in the Southeast.
Over the course of his career, he built bridges across west Georgia, Alabama, and eastern Mississippi through the 1880s. At one time, he was responsible for building the major bridges crossing the Chattahoochee River.
Horace King also trained his four sons in the craft, and together they formed a bridge-building company. After the Civil War, he continued his work as an engineer and architect while also serving two terms in the Alabama House of Representatives. He later moved to LaGrange, where he lived with his family until his death in 1885.
